Lesson 4. SHOOTING FUNDAMENTALS and SHOOTING POSITIONS

Before starting to shoot, a shooter must first determine the dominant eye. The dominant eye is the eye you should be used for aiming. The dominant eye can by easily determined by the following exercise:

  1. Extend both arms in front of the body.
  2. Place the hands together as shown in the picture, and forming a small opening between them.
  3. Keep both eyes open and look through the opening at a distant object.
  4. While continuing to look at the object, move both bands back toward your face until they touch your face.
  5. The opening in the hands will now be over a single eye, and that is your dominant eye.

SHOOTING FUNDAMENTALS:

To shoot pistol accurately, it is first necessary to learn and understand the six fundamentals of pistol shooting:

  1. Position
  2. Grip
  3. Breath Control
  4. Sight Alignment
  5. Trigger Squeeze (also know as Trigger control)
  6. Follow-through

These fundamentals must be properly performed every time a pistol is fired.

The two hands standing position is the easiest position for a new shooter.

Breath control is to minimize body movement while taking a shot. Before each shot, take a breath; let out enough air to be comfortable, and hold the remaining breath while firing the shot.

Sight alignment is the relationship of the front and rear sights. The eye must be lined up with the front and rear sights. To fire an accurate shot, a correct sight picture should be achieved when each shot is fired. A correct sight picture is obtained by achieving the proper sight alignment and then putting the aligned sights into their proper relationship with the target.

Don’t expect to be able to hold a perfect sight picture. No pistol shooter, no matter how experienced, can hold a pistol in firing position without some motion. This motion is called arc of movement. The very best that any shooter can do is to keep the arc of movement at a minimum – it cannot be eliminated.

Trigger squeeze (Trigger control) is the key for accurate shooting. When ready to fire, the trigger must be squeezed straight to the rear in a smooth, continuous manner without disturbing the sight alignment. Once trigger squeeze has begun, it should be applied smoothly and continuously. Don’t speed up or slow down the pressure or apply it in a quick jerk or pulling manner.

Trigger squeeze and sight alignment are the most important aspects of pistol shooting, they must be done simultaneously while maintaining a minimum arc of movement.

Follow-through means continuing to apply al of the shooting fundamentals throughout the delivery of the shot. The idea of follow-through is to prevent any unnecessary movement before the bullet leaves the barrel.

About the National Rifle Association

National Rifle Association (NRA) was established in 1871. It is a non-profit organization supported entirely by membership fees and public donations. Originally formed to promote marksmanship training, the NRA has since reached out to establish a wide variety of activities, ranging from gun safety programs for children and adults to gun collection and gunsmithing. Hundreds of thousands of law enforcement personnel have received training from NRA Certified Instructors in the firearms skills needed to protect themselves and the public.

The NRA does not receive any appropriations from Congress, nor is it a trade organization. It is not affiliated with any gun or ammunition manufacturers or with any businesses which deal in guns or ammunition.

The primary goal of NRA is to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, especially in regard to the Second Amendment right of the individual citizen to keep and bear arms. If you are not an NRA member, please take consideration of joining the NRA. NRA is the only organization that is formed to protect our Second Amendment right. There are many Gun-Control advocates trying relentlessly to push the congress to ban handgun for self and home defense; it is every gun owner’s duty to join the NRA and help protect your gun ownership right! The NRA annual membership fee is only $35. You can join NRA and starting to protect your right today at HERE!
